### Francis Ford Coppola's Long-Awaited "Megalopolis" Misses the Mark
Renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, who financed his dream project "Megalopolis" by selling one of his wine companies for a $120 million credit line, sought to create another masterpiece but seems to have fallen short. After nearly 40 years of development and significant investment, the movie culminates in an overly ambitious and convoluted spectacle.
Adam Driver stars as Cesar Catilina, a city planner with a revolutionary vision for New Rome, a futuristic version of New York City. Cesar’s ambitions to rebuild the city using an environmentally friendly building material called Megalon put him at odds with the conservative Mayor Franklyn Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Cesar's personal life adds further drama, such as his complicated romantic entanglement with Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, and a jealous ex-girlfriend portrayed by Aubrey Plaza.
The movie, said to be partly inspired by the Catiline Conspiracy of 63 B.C., mixes several themes ranging from Greco-Roman motifs to modern-day American politics, resulting in a muddled narrative. Unrealistic CGI, a convoluted storyline, and over-the-top performances contribute to its downfall. Elements such as a visionary uncle portrayed by Jon Voight and a nefarious cousin played by Shia LeBeouf add more chaos to the already intricate plot.
Coppola’s intended cautionary tale about American political and social issues is instead viewed as overwrought and campy. Despite its numerous lofty aims, "Megalopolis" ultimately fails to deliver a coherent and engaging story. As much as Coppola's past masterpieces have contributed to cinema, this latest offering may be best forgotten.
