In a surprising departure from its lineup of SUVs, Volvo has introduced its first-ever minivan, the EM90. Leveraging its partnership with Geely, the Swedish automaker has developed a luxurious people hauler that combines practicality with cutting-edge electric powertrain technology. Boasting sliding doors on both sides and a spacious six-seat layout, the Volvo EM90 aims to redefine the minivan segment.

Drawing inspiration from the Zeekr 009, the EM90 features a more refined appearance with a redesigned front fascia, showcasing a subtly illuminated "grille" and sleek new headlights reminiscent of the EX90 electric SUV. The overall profile of the minivan reveals its origins, while the rear has been subtly updated with new taillights that seamlessly blend with Volvo's distinctive design language.

Inside the EM90, passengers are treated to a luxurious experience. The middle row offers a pair of comfortable lounge-like ventilated seats that can slide forward and backward for added convenience. A 15.6-inch screen descends from the headliner, providing entertainment and control options. The infotainment system is anchored by a sizable 15.4-inch touchscreen, offering access to various functions and features with minimal physical controls. A fully digital instrument cluster enhances the modern interior, built to accommodate different needs, be it creating a theatre-like setting, a meeting space, or even a bedroom.

Underneath its elegant exterior, the Volvo EM90 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor, delivering an impressive 268 horsepower (200 kW). This propulsion system enables the minivan to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 8.3 seconds. While currently limited to rear-wheel drive, the Zeekr 009 counterpart offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, boasting a staggering 536 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds.

Fueling the EM90 is a massive 116-kWh battery pack, capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. Volvo claims a maximum range of 459 miles (738 kilometers), though this figure corresponds to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). In a nod to the EX90, the minivan features bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle to power other electric vehicles or home appliances.

The Volvo EM90 is currently available for pre-order in China, where it will compete with other high-end minivans like the Lexus LM and the Buick GL8. Volvo is also exploring the possibility of introducing the EM90 to additional markets, further expanding its presence in the luxury minivan segment. With its remarkable features and impressive electric powertrain, the EM90 signifies Volvo's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
