In a social media video that has gone viral, a man can be seen wearing a new Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset while driving a Tesla Cybertruck in Utah County. The video, which was posted to X on Saturday, has already amassed over 17 million views as of Monday morning.
The four-second clip was filmed from another vehicle, which pulled alongside the Cybertruck on Timpanogos Highway in Lehi. The driver of the truck is shown wearing the Vision Pro headset, briefly touching the steering wheel with one hand before fully engaging with the headset as he drives past a Traverse Mountain sign.
However, Apple's user guide for the Vision Pro explicitly advises against using the device while operating a moving vehicle or engaging in activities that require attention to safety. The company warns against using the headset while driving, riding a bicycle, operating heavy machinery, or in any other potentially dangerous situations.
Additionally, social media users have pointed out that the Tesla Cybertruck in the video does not have Tesla's full self-driving or autopilot features enabled. Tesla has made it clear that while these features are designed to enhance driving capabilities, they still require the driver to be fully attentive and have their hands on the wheel, ready to take over control at any moment.
This incident comes in the wake of Tesla's recent recall of nearly all its vehicles sold in the United States, totaling more than 2 million across its various models. The recall was prompted by a defective system intended to ensure driver attention while using Autopilot, Tesla's partially automated driving system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a two-year investigation into a series of crashes involving Autopilot, some of which were fatal.
While another viral video seemed to depict a man driving and wearing the Vision Pro headset, the driver later confirmed that it was actually a "skit" he had filmed with friends. He clarified that he only drove the Tesla for a brief period of 30 to 40 seconds while wearing the headset.
The video has sparked debate and criticism, with many questioning the decision to use such cutting-edge technology while operating a vehicle. As technology progresses and new innovations enter the market, it is essential to prioritize safety and responsible usage to prevent potential accidents and ensure the well-being of all road users.
