In a surprising turn of events, the highly anticipated flight game, Ultrawings 2, made its debut on the PlayStation VR headset (PSVR2) platform on January 25, leaving both developers and fans shocked. Bit Planet Games, the creators of Ultrawings 2, had initially announced a late 2023 release window for the game on PSVR2. However, the release was unexpectedly brought forward, catching everyone off guard.
Fans who had been eagerly following the game's progress speculated that the developers had shadow-dropped the flight simulator a few weeks earlier than the original planned launch date, but it was later confirmed that this was not the case. In a social media post on January 26, Bit Planet Games expressed their surprise, stating, "Shadow dropping Ultrawings 2 on PSVR2 today was not on our 2024 bingo card but, well, here we are."
Although the sudden release delighted many fans, there were a few minor issues with the initial build of the game. Bit Planet Games had prepared a patch to address these issues and had intended to release it alongside the game. However, due to the unexpected launch, the patch will now be released a few days later to ensure a smoother gaming experience.
Speculation arose regarding whether Sony had accidentally launched Ultrawings 2 early. Kotaku reached out to Bit Planet Games for clarification, and the developers shared that they did not believe it was a mistake on Sony's part. They stated that they were uncertain about what exactly had occurred and remained open to the possibility that it may have been something they overlooked or mishandled during the release process.
A Reddit post from one of the developers shed some light on the situation, indicating that the release date information on the PSN's backend may not have been properly updated. The developer explained, "We had set an Estimated Release date for 2/9 and, well, look what happened. With that said, I think there is an entirely separate section for REAL release dates that was set to late last year that wasn't updated."
Following the inquiries from Kotaku, Bit Planet Games took to social media again, providing an update and assuring fans that the necessary patch was already submitted and would be available within a few days. Despite the unexpected and somewhat chaotic launch, it appears that the developers are grateful for the buzz and attention generated by the surprising release.
While the circumstances surrounding Ultrawings 2's early launch remain a mystery, the game's unexpected availability has certainly sparked conversations among gaming enthusiasts. Now, players can dive into the immersive world of Ultrawings 2 on PSVR2 and experience the thrill of flying firsthand.
