In a captivating video recently shared by Tesla, the company showcased its second-generation Optimus humanoid robot, leaving viewers astounded by its remarkable capabilities. The Gen 2 Optimus prototype, featured in the video, showcased a redesigned appearance, remarkably human-like hand movements, and a lighter overall weight compared to its predecessors.
During the demonstration, the Gen 2 Optimus robot displayed fluid movements akin to a human being, with an ability to move its neck and arms with precision. According to Tesla, the robot incorporates custom-designed actuators and sensors, including a 2-DoF actuated neck. Notably, the Gen 2 Optimus has a 30% increase in walking speed compared to its prior iteration, while managing to shed 10 kg of weight.
Emphasizing enhanced balance and greater control, Tesla's Gen 2 Optimus robot features faster 11-DoF hands equipped with tactile sensing on all fingers. The company demonstrated the robot's impressive hand control by showcasing it delicately handling an egg in the video. Surprisingly, Tesla concluded the video by showcasing a couple of Gen 2 Optimus robots dancing to music, showcasing the robot's agility and capabilities.
Tesla's Bot team members took to social media to dispel any doubts about the authenticity of the video, clarifying that the footage was indeed real-time and captured without any CGI effects. The team expressed pride in the hardware improvements achieved, hinting at the immense effort and dedication invested by the Tesla Bot team.
It is worth noting that Tesla's humanoid robot program is relatively young, beginning just over two years ago. The company first announced its ambitious intentions to build a humanoid robot during its AI Day event in August 2021, showcasing a static model and a person in a robot suit dancing on stage. However, Tesla's Optimus program has witnessed rapid progress since then, as evidenced by the development prototype "Bumblebee" displayed during AI Day 2.0 in September 2022.
At that time, Tesla demonstrated "Bumblebee," which was constructed using off-the-shelf components and capable of independent walking without human assistance. Subsequently, Tesla unveiled the more advanced Gen 1 Optimus robot, integrating Tesla-designed actuators and sensors and exhibiting smoother movements. By May 2023, Tesla showcased a video revealing the Gen 1 Optimus walking unassisted, while a September 2023 update featured the robot autonomously sorting objects based on color and performing challenging yoga poses that require exceptional balance.
With the introduction of the Gen 2 Optimus robot, Tesla has once again established itself as a frontrunner in the field of humanoid robotics. The company's continued advancements in building increasingly sophisticated robots highlight their commitment to exploring the boundaries of artificial intelligence and robotics. The unveiling of the Gen 2 Optimus marks another significant milestone on Tesla's journey to revolutionize the field and pave the way for a future where advanced humanoid robots will assist humans in various tasks.
