Spotify Tests AI-Driven Playlist Creation Feature, Enhancing User Experience

Music streaming giant Spotify is currently testing a new feature that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create personalized playlists for its users. The test, which was confirmed by the company to TechCrunch, aims to gather user feedback and gauge how they respond to AI-driven playlist creation. Although no specific launch date has been announced, the feature has been spotted in a TikTok video shared by user @robdad_, generating excitement among music enthusiasts.
The AI playlists feature can be accessed within the Spotify app's "Your Library" tab by tapping on the plus (+) button located at the top right corner of the screen. A pop-up menu appears, which includes the new AI playlist option alongside existing choices such as "Playlist" and "Blend." Currently available only in English, the feature's description reads "Turn your ideas into playlists using AI."
Upon selecting the AI playlists option, users are presented with a screen where they can either type prompts into an AI chatbot-style box or explore a list of suggested prompts to get started. Prompts showcased in the TikTok video include options like "get focused at work with instrumental electronica," "fill in the silence with background café music," "get pumped up with fun, upbeat, and positive songs," and "explore a niche genre like Witch House."
Once a prompt is selected, the AI chatbot initiates its process, displaying the message "Processing your request..." A sample playlist is then presented, providing users with the opportunity to refine the playlist by swiping left to remove any songs they don't prefer.
This AI-driven playlist creation feature was first discovered by tech veteran Chris Messina in October, who shared screenshots of its existence on the Spotify mobile app. However, Spotify declined to comment on its plans at that time. The current test indicates that Spotify is actively investing in AI technologies to enhance its user experience and personalized recommendations.
While Spotify acknowledged the ongoing test, the company is keen on downplaying expectations and excitement surrounding the AI playlists feature. A Spotify spokesperson mentioned that the test serves as a learning experience and the company has nothing further to share at this time.
Spotify has been actively incorporating AI into its platform, evident in its recent launch of an AI-driven DJ feature earlier this year. This feature offers personalized playlists and commentary in an AI voice based on Spotify's head of cultural partnerships, Xavier 'X' Jernigan. Furthermore, Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, has expressed other potential uses for AI, including summarizing podcasts, creating audio ads, and assisting artists in music creation.
As fans eagerly await the potential launch of the AI playlists feature, Spotify continues to explore the possibilities of AI in various aspects of its service. Users are encouraged to provide feedback and share their experiences if they have access to the feature in their app.
