In an earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), revealed that the company's latest app, Threads, has garnered "just under" 100 million monthly active users. With this impressive growth, Zuckerberg expressed optimism, stating that there is a "good chance" Threads could eventually reach the milestone of 1 billion users in the coming years.
Zuckerberg emphasized the need for a billion-person conversations app that fosters positivity, and he believes Threads has the potential to fulfill that vision. Despite initially facing criticism for limited functionality and overwhelming brand posts, the app has rebounded in recent weeks due to Meta's continuous addition of new features. Threads has also been successful in attracting "power users" who were previously engaged with Meta's other app, X.
The positive numbers for Threads contribute to Meta's overall success, as the company reported over $34 billion in revenue for the quarter, marking a 23 percent increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, Meta announced a record-high of 3.9 billion users across its various platforms.
Zuckerberg also revealed Meta's future focus on generative AI, prioritizing AI projects across the company. He believes that AI technology will significantly reshape the way people use Meta's apps, including Threads.
However, Meta's investment in the metaverse does not come without its challenges. The company's AR and VR division, Reality Labs, experienced a decline in revenue to $210 million, with losses reaching a staggering $3.7 billion for the quarter and exceeding $11 billion since the start of 2023. Meta's CFO, Susan Li, foresees further acceleration of losses due to ongoing product development efforts in augmented reality/virtual reality.
Despite the financial setbacks, Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the potential of AI advancements within AR and VR. He believes that generative AI has the power to transform how people engage with Meta's apps and services.
As Meta continues to push for growth and innovation, the future of Threads looks promising. With the goal of reaching 1 billion users, Zuckerberg and Meta are determined to create a positive and inclusive space for public conversations.
