In an exciting turn of events, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) players eagerly awaited the recent ban announcement for the Pioneer and Modern formats. Following the controversial reception of the previous ban announcement, the latest changes confirmed during the weeklyMTG show on Tuesday brought relief and anticipation for a healthier playing experience.

One ban that came as no surprise to those involved in ban discussions from the previous week was the exclusion of Geological Appraiser. This card, known for its ability to create one-card combos leading to game-ending scenarios as early as turn three, created toxic and polarizing play patterns within the community. Moreover, the deck featuring Geological Appraiser displayed startling success at the Regional Championship events that took place over the preceding weekend. Consequently, Wizards of the Coast made the decision to ban Geological Appraiser in both the Pioneer and Explorer formats.

The Pioneer format also saw another archetype utilizing the Discover mechanic emerge due to The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. However, the Quintorius Kand combo deck, although slower in comparison to the Geological Appraiser build, did not meet the same ban fate. This more flexible Discover combo deck failed to match the explosive speed of Geological Appraiser. As a result of this ban, players interested in exploring the potential of Discover mechanics can still legally engage with the Quintorius Kand combo deck.

While Wizards of the Coast acknowledges the presence of the Quintorius Kand combo deck, they have chosen to monitor its performance following the ban. This deck is capable of a one-card combo that can secure victory as early as turn four, solely utilizing its namesake card. However, the extra turn allows opponents to strategically plan and better position themselves for the pivotal turn, making it a more manageable threat.

"We'll keep an eye on Quintorius decks in Pioneer. It can win as early as turn four after resolving solely its namesake card. But that extra turn allows opponents to set up their own game plan and prepare for the pivotal turn more successfully," stated a representative from Wizards of the Coast.

With the ban of Geological Appraiser and the monitoring of the Quintorius Kand combo deck, MTG players can look forward to a more balanced and dynamic gameplay experience in the Pioneer and Explorer formats. Stay tuned for further updates on the evolving meta within Magic: The Gathering.
