In a recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Amazon founder and Blue Origin CEO Jeff Bezos shared his ambitious vision of giant cylindrical space stations as the future homes for a trillion humans in our solar system. Bezos believes that these colossal habitats, inspired by science-fiction writer Gerard K. O'Neill's descriptions, can support an astronomical number of people, fostering a civilization with a multitude of geniuses.
"I would love to see a trillion humans living in the solar system," Bezos expressed to Fridman. "If we had a trillion humans, we would have, at any given time, 1,000 Mozarts and 1,000 Einsteins."
To realize his vision, Bezos emphasizes the need for enormous space stations, stating that the planetary surfaces are simply too small. This perspective marks a striking contrast to his space industry rival, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, who aims to establish cities on other planets like Mars, making humanity multiplanetary.
Bezos envisions a future where Earth, transformed into a holiday destination, can be visited via shuttle, much like a trip to Yellowstone National Park. He suggests that future humans will have the option to live in an Amazon O'Neill colony or return to Earth. Critics have described this viewpoint as reductive and self-serving, as it places Amazon in a lucrative position within this future scenario.
The Blue Origin CEO also expressed optimism about the future of artificial intelligence (AI), dismissing concerns over its potential dangers as being overly exaggerated. Bezos believes that people should not be overly concerned about the risks associated with AI technology.
Furthermore, Bezos hinted at the possibility of his future space habitats offering refuge as the Earth's climate worsens and living on the planet's surface becomes increasingly untenable. It is worth noting that Bezos has been actively involved in environmental initiatives and climate change mitigation efforts.
While Bezos' expansive vision of giant space stations as a solution for humanity's future has sparked intrigue and debate, the logistics and practicality of realizing such habitats on a massive scale remain to be seen. As the space industry continues to evolve, Bezos and Musk's divergent perspectives promise exciting and potentially transformative possibilities for the future of human civilization beyond Earth's boundaries.
