In response to concerns about the potential misuse of vehicle data in abusive relationships, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has reached out to nine major automakers, requesting information on their plans to protect individuals from stalking or harassment.
Rosenworcel emphasized that survivors of domestic violence should not have to choose between giving up their cars and being subjected to stalking and harm. She highlighted the fact that almost all new vehicles now come equipped with convenience features that utilize telecommunications to locate cars in parking lots, remotely start the engine, and connect with emergency responders. However, she raised concerns that the wireless connectivity and location data required by these features could be utilized by abusers to cause harm in abusive relationships.
The letter calls on automakers to provide detailed information about their connected car systems and the measures they have in place to support individuals who have been harassed by domestic abusers. Specifically, Rosenworcel asks if the companies have policies to remove access to connected apps and features upon request from an individual who is being abused, even if that person's name is on the vehicle's title.
No official comments from the automakers have been received as of now.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a prominent trade association, has issued a statement expressing its firm stance against the misuse of connected vehicle technology to stalk or harass individuals. Recognizing the gravity of the issue, Rosenworcel's letter to automakers was prompted by a recent investigative report published in The New York Times which highlighted how connected cars are being weaponized in abusive relationships.
The FCC's initiative shines a light on the urgent need for automakers to prioritize the security and privacy of vehicle data. As connected features become increasingly prevalent, it is crucial that appropriate measures are in place to protect and support those affected by domestic abuse.
