Embark Studios, the developer of the popular multiplayer FPS game The Finals, has responded to criticism following the revelation that the game primarily utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) for its voice acting.
Despite its successful debut on Steam, some players expressed disappointment upon discovering that AI is primarily responsible for the in-game vocal recordings. The information came to light during a podcast featuring Andreas Almström, the game's audio designer, who stated that "with a few exceptions," AI is used for the majority of the voice work in The Finals.
Embark Studios has now confirmed that the game utilizes a combination of both AI and real actors, emphasizing that the aim is not to completely replace actors in game development. A spokesperson for the studio stated, "making games without actors isn't an end goal."
The spokesperson further explained, "We use a combination of recorded voice audio and audio generated via text-to-speech (TTS) tools in our games, depending on the context." The studio believes that recording real scenes with actors can add depth to the game world, particularly for character chemistry and conflict. However, in certain situations, such as contextual in-game action call-outs, TTS allows for tailored voiceovers that can be implemented quickly.
The use of AI in gaming has become a contentious issue within the industry. SAG-AFTRA, the union representing US actors, has been considering a potential strike against video game publishers, with AI emerging as a prominent discussion point.
SAG-AFTRA is advocating for an 11% increase in wages for game performers, paralleling the demands made under film and television contracts. Additionally, the union is seeking safeguards against the use of AI, which it argues poses a threat to performers' artistic expression and job security.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's chief negotiator, expressed concern, stating, "The voice and performance capture artists who bring video game characters to life deserve a contract that reflects the value they bring to the multibillion-dollar gaming industry." He warned that without contractual protections, performers may unwittingly contribute to the erosion of their own artistry and livelihoods.
As the debate continues, Embark Studios remains committed to striking a balance between AI and real actors, recognizing the value that both bring to game development. The Finals stands as an example of how technology and human creativity can combine to deliver immersive gaming experiences.
