The Chicago White Sox have officially announced the re-signing of right-hander Bryan Shaw to a minor league contract with an invitation to join the team's big league spring camp. This marks Shaw's third minor league deal with the White Sox in under a year. Shaw previously signed with the team last spring and inked a new contract in April after not making the Opening Day roster.
During the 2023 season, Shaw delivered a 4.14 ERA over 45 2/3 innings out of the White Sox bullpen, showing improvement from his time with the Guardians in 2022 where he posted a 5.40 ERA. Shaw demonstrated reduced hard contact and a significant decrease in his home run rate. Despite having the lowest grounder rate of his 13 MLB seasons, Shaw ended the year on a high note with an impressive 0.92 ERA over his last 18 appearances.
Having been a reliable bullpen workhorse during his prime years with Cleveland from 2013 to 2017, Shaw's performance has been more inconsistent over the past six seasons. With a 5.07 ERA over 314 innings since Opening Day 2018 with multiple teams, Shaw's successful 2021 and 2023 campaigns stand out.
Now entering his age-36 season, Shaw's return provides a familiar face in a bullpen that has undergone significant changes. The White Sox have added veteran arms like John Brebbia, Tim Hill, and other minor league signings to bolster their pitching staff. Shaw's presence offers depth and experience to a team that is looking to strengthen its bullpen for the upcoming season.
