In a recent trade deal, the Washington Commanders have reportedly traded their starting quarterback from last season, Sam Howell, to the Seattle Seahawks. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Seahawks will receive Howell, along with a fourth-round pick (No. 102) and a sixth-round pick (No. 179) in the upcoming NFL Draft. In return, the Commanders are set to receive a third-round pick (No. 78) and a fifth-round pick (No. 152).
Howell, who was selected by the Commanders in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, started in one game for Washington during the 2022 season. In that game, he led the team to a decisive 26-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.
Initially chosen over veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, Howell's tenure with the Commanders was full of ups and downs. Although he recorded 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in 18 games over his two-year stint with the team, his performance was met with mixed reviews. However, former head coach Ron Rivera was a strong supporter of Howell.
With the recent hiring of former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as head coach, it was widely speculated that Howell's time with Washington would come to an end. The trade to the Seahawks confirms these rumors.
Washington, currently holding the second overall pick in the upcoming draft, is expected to select a new quarterback. As a sign of their future plans, the team recently acquired veteran signal caller Marcus Mariota, who served as Jalen Hurts' backup for the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
In Seattle, Howell is expected to compete with quarterback Geno Smith, who was named the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year. Smith's previous backup, Drew Lock, reportedly agreed to join the New York Giants earlier this week.
As the trade between the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks reshapes their respective rosters, football fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming NFL Draft and the potential impact of these new acquisitions.
