The news was first reported by Jeff Goodman of Fieldof68. While final contract discussions have concluded, no official announcement has been made by the school as a deal has not been signed yet.
Pat Kelsey, currently the head coach at the College of Charleston, has an impressive track record in college basketball. He has led his teams to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and three out of the past four years, including his time at Winthrop before joining College of Charleston.
Kelsey, a Cincinnati native, has strong connections to Louisville as a disciple of former head coach Chris Mack and former assistant Dino Gaudio. With the Louisville program facing the need for both on-court and reputational rebuilding, Kelsey's experience and leadership will be crucial.
Before embarking on his coaching career, Kelsey had a successful playing career. He excelled as a point guard at Xavier under the guidance of Skip Prosser and also played a season at Wyoming under Joby Wright, a former Indiana University player.
Over his 12 seasons as a college coach, Kelsey boasts an impressive record of 261 wins and 122 losses. At College of Charleston, he guided the Cougars to a remarkable 31-4 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in his second year. This year, they returned to the tournament with a 27-8 record but suffered a first-round loss to Alabama.
Kelsey's dedication to his players and the community has earned him recognition. He was twice a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and made a memorable speech at Ohio State after the tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in 2012. Kelsey even participated in a triathlon in honor of one of the victims and organized a game where his players wore the names of the victims on their jerseys.
Interestingly, in 2017, Kelsey was set to become the coach at the University of Massachusetts but had a change of heart during the news conference and decided not to take the job for personal reasons. Nonetheless, he has proven his coaching abilities and is highly regarded in the basketball community.
The University of Louisville's decision to bring in Pat Kelsey signals their commitment to turning around their basketball program. Fans and supporters are eager to see the deal finalized and anticipate the positive impact Kelsey will have on and off the court.
