In an eventful weigh-in session for UFC 299, bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley and his challenger Marlon Vera both successfully made weight, setting the stage for their highly anticipated title fight on Saturday night.
O'Malley, who recently claimed the bantamweight throne, confidently hit the scale at 135 pounds, showcasing his dedication to maintaining his championship status. Vera, on the other hand, needed the box to assist him but managed to make the 135-pound mark, resulting in a collective sigh of relief from his team.
However, backup fighter Merab Dvalishvili did not have to rely on any external assistance as he hit the scale spot-on at 135 pounds. Dvalishvili now stands ready to step in for the main event if needed, displaying his preparedness and determination.
In the co-main event, Dustin Poirier made weight at 156 pounds for his upcoming five-round matchup against Benoit Saint Denis. Poirier, known as the "God of War," demonstrated his commitment to excellence by hitting the scales at 155 pounds, matching the championship weight limit for his biggest fight to date.
The official weigh-in event held in Miami followed a slightly different structure than previous ones, requiring all fighters to step on the scale between 9 and 10 a.m. ET. Notably, all ten main card fighters, including Michael Page and Kevin Holland, successfully made weight at 170 pounds for their upcoming UFC bout.
Unfortunately, there was one fighter who failed to meet the weight requirement during the one-hour period. CJ Vergara tipped the scale at 127 pounds, missing the flyweight limit by a pound. As a result, Vergara will face a 30 percent deduction from his show purse as a penalty for the missed weight.
With the fighters successfully making weight and the stage set for UFC 299 on Saturday night, fans can eagerly anticipate an action-packed evening of thrilling fights and championship battles. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and results from this eagerly anticipated event.
