The San Francisco 49ers have made significant moves to strengthen their defensive coaching staff for the upcoming season. Following the departure of Steve Wilks, who was fired after the team's Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the organization has announced the promotion of Nick Sorensen and the addition of Brandon Staley to their coaching staff.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers have promoted Nick Sorensen from pass game coordinator to the role of defensive coordinator. Sorensen, who has been with the team since 2022, started as a defensive assistant before becoming the pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach. This will be his first time serving as a defensive coordinator.
Adding to their coaching prowess, the 49ers have also brought in Brandon Staley, a former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator and ex-Los Angeles Chargers head coach. Staley will join the staff in a prominent role, potentially as the assistant head coach.
Nick Sorensen's coaching career began with the Seattle Seahawks, where he worked under Pete Carroll. He was part of the coaching staff that won the Super Bowl in 2013, serving as an assistant special teams coach under Brian Schneider, who is currently the 49ers special teams coordinator. Sorensen then transitioned to the role of assistant defensive backs coach in 2016 and went on to coach the secondary from 2017 to 2020. He most recently served as the special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars under Urban Meyer.
This appointment marks the second time that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has chosen a former assistant of Pete Carroll as his defensive coordinator. The first was Robert Saleh, who previously served as a defensive quality control coach with the Seattle Seahawks. Saleh, after leaving Seattle, went on to have a successful stint as the defensive coordinator for the 49ers before taking on the head coaching role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With these two key defensive coaching hires, the 49ers are looking to bolster their defensive strategies and build upon their strong performances in recent seasons. Fans eagerly anticipate seeing how Sorensen's promotion and Staley's addition will impact the team's defense in the 2022 season.
