In exciting news for the Louisville basketball program, Richard Pitino has emerged as a leading contender for the head coach position at the University of Louisville. Cardinal Authority has confirmed through multiple sources that Pitino, the son of former U of L Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino, is being seriously considered for the role.

U of L athletic director Josh Heird has been in contact with Pitino several times over the past few days, indicating the genuine interest from both parties. At 41 years old, Pitino has already gained valuable coaching experience, having just completed his third successful season at New Mexico.

Despite New Mexico's 26-10 overall season record, the Lobos' journey was highlighted by winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, they fell short in the first round against Clemson last Friday.

This opportunity at Louisville comes after the university parted ways with Kenny Payne two weeks ago, following a disappointing 12-52 record over two seasons. Pitino's name has recently emerged as one of the top candidates for the vacant coaching position, alongside other contenders like Josh Shertz from Indiana State, Pat Kelsey from Charleston, and Shaheen Holloway from Seton Hall.

Richard Pitino has a strong connection to Louisville, previously serving as an assistant coach under his father from 2007-2009. He later gained further coaching experience at Florida under Billy Donovan before returning to Louisville for the successful 2011-2012 season. During that time, he played a crucial role as the Cardinals' associate head coach in their memorable run to the Final Four.

After a brief stint as head coach at Florida International, where he achieved an 18-14 record during the 2012-2013 season, Pitino accepted the head coaching position at Minnesota. Over the course of eight seasons with the Gophers, he compiled a respectable 141-123 record, including a memorable NIT championship in his debut season and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Pitino's most notable NCAA Tournament success came in 2019 when he led his team to a victory over Louisville in the first round. Now, with three years under his belt at New Mexico, Pitino boasts an overall record of 61-41.

As the coaching search intensifies, the anticipation grows to see if Louisville will welcome back a familiar face in Richard Pitino. With his experience, previous success, and strong ties to the program, Pitino could be the missing puzzle piece to rejuvenate the Cardinals and guide them back to greatness. Only time will tell if he will follow in his father's footsteps and lead Louisville basketball to new heights.
