The Philadelphia Eagles have made yet another move to bolster their quarterback lineup, signing free agent Will Grier to a one-year contract, as reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter. This marks the team's second quarterback acquisition in less than a week, following the trade for Kenny Pickett.
Grier, 28, was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers as the 100th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite starting only two games during his rookie season, Grier struggled, resulting in losses for his team. His performance was far from impressive, completing just 53.8% of his attempts and throwing for zero touchdowns and four interceptions, with a passer rating of 33.2.
After two seasons, Grier was released by the Panthers and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys. During his time in Dallas, Grier mainly served as the third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, without taking a regular-season snap. The Cowboys' acquisition of Trey Lance signaled a clear shift away from Grier.
Following his departure from the Cowboys, Grier spent time on the practice squads of the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots. Eventually, he joined the Los Angeles Chargers' roster in mid-December, reuniting him with Eagles' offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.
With the recent coaching hires in Philadelphia, it is clear that Moore and Nussmeier see potential in Grier. The intention behind adding Grier to the Eagles' roster is to provide support to Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, and Tanner McKee as they acclimate to the team's new offensive coordinator. While Grier may also compete with McKee for the QB3 position, McKee is considered the frontrunner for the spot.
The Philadelphia Eagles have demonstrated their commitment to fortifying their quarterback depth chart with these recent additions. The upcoming season will offer a fresh opportunity for Grier to prove his abilities and contribute to the team's success on the field.
