After an extensive search, Oklahoma State University has appointed Steve Lutz as the new men's head basketball coach, sources have confirmed. Lutz, who recently led Western Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament during his tenure, will embark on a five-year contract with the Cowboys.
Lutz brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously spent three years as the head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. During his time there from 2021-2023, he guided the Islanders to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, securing the Southland championship title in both years.
With a reputation for his skills in recruiting, program-building, and player development, Lutz has received glowing endorsements from former colleagues Greg McDermott of Creighton and Matt Painter of Purdue. Notably, Lutz played a significant role in recruiting Zach Edey, who would later become the National Player of the Year, during his tenure at Purdue as an assistant coach from 2017-2021.
Lutz's appointment comes in the wake of the departure of Mike Boynton Jr., who was relieved of his duties after seven seasons as the Cowboys' head coach. Boynton led the team to one NCAA Tournament appearance and amassed a record of 119-109 during his tenure.
Sources close to the decision-making process revealed that Oklahoma State considered several high-profile candidates but ultimately settled on Lutz due to his strong track record, ability to build successful programs, and readiness to take charge at a Power Conference institution.
With the enthusiastic endorsement of his former bosses and a history of success, Lutz is poised to take the reins of the Oklahoma State men's basketball program and lead them to further achievements in the coming seasons.
