New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas announced that the team has allowed quarterback Zach Wilson to explore a trade as the 2021 No. 2 overall draft pick's time with the Jets appears to be coming to an end. Wilson, who has struggled since joining the team, has a 12-21 record as a starter with a career quarterback rating of 73.2. Despite showing flashes of talent, Wilson's performance has been marred by subpar play, having thrown for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions with a completion percentage of 57.0 in his three-year career.
The Jets initially planned for Wilson to learn under veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whom they acquired from the Green Bay Packers last offseason. However, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in the season opener, leading the Jets to rely on Wilson throughout the year. Wilson's underwhelming performance included throwing for 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, as well as a league-high seven lost fumbles in 12 games before a concussion in Week 15 ended his season.
Despite the possibility of untapped potential, experts believe the Jets may not receive significant return if they trade Wilson. Reports suggest that a trade could fetch the Jets a fifth- to sixth-round pick or even less, with one assistant coach likening Wilson's value to "a two-week stay at a Best Western." As the Jets navigate the decision to part ways with Wilson, the quarterback's future in the NFL remains uncertain.
