In a move to bolster their offensive line, the New York Jets have brought back a familiar face by trading for right tackle Morgan Moses from the Baltimore Ravens. According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, the Jets will swap fourth-round picks with the Ravens, while also sending a compensatory sixth-rounder to Baltimore as part of the deal.
Moses, who is 33 years old, previously served as the Jets' starting right tackle during the 2021 season. He signed a one-year deal with the team, providing much-needed stability to an offensive line that was undergoing changes. With the Jets once again in need of reinforcements, Moses returns to New York after spending the past two seasons with the Ravens.
Although Moses has primarily played as a right tackle throughout his NFL career, he has occasionally taken snaps as a left tackle in recent years, both with the Ravens and previously with the Washington Football Team. He originally spent the first six years of his career with Washington.
Currently, Moses is in the final year of a three-year, $15 million contract he signed with the Ravens in the 2022 offseason. He is set to earn a base salary of $5.5 million in 2024.
Last season, Moses missed three games due to a shoulder injury, breaking his streak of 134 consecutive games played since his rookie year in 2014. He was forced to sit out the Week 5 game against the Steelers and later missed Weeks 9 and 10 due to the same ailment.
The Jets began their work on the offensive line earlier this week by signing offensive guard John Simpson, who was Moses' teammate in Baltimore last season. Simpson's two-year deal suggests that he will likely have an opportunity to start at left guard, replacing the departed Laken Tomlinson.
With Moses likely to take over as the starting right tackle, the Jets may look to make additional moves in the upcoming draft. However, second-year player Carter Warren, who gained some starting experience at right tackle as a rookie, could also be in the competition. This situation opens up the possibility for Alijah Vera-Tucker to secure the vacant right guard spot.
As for the Ravens, they now face the challenge of filling the void left by the departures of Simpson and Moses on their offensive line. With the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Kevin Zeitler and Ronnie Stanley, Baltimore will need to focus on improving the talent and depth upfront.
