Mets and Tigers Face Another Rainout, Doubleheader Scheduled for Thursday

The wet and cold conditions of April in the Northeast have continued to play havoc with the New York Mets and Detroit Tigers as their game on Wednesday was postponed due to rain for the second consecutive day. As a result, the teams will now play a single-admission doubleheader at Citi Field on Thursday, starting at 12:10 p.m. ET.
This unfortunate turn of events marks the third rainout on the Mets' season-opening homestand, with rain also spoiling their Opening Day, just like the previous year. Last season, the Mets experienced a similar string of postponements, with three games called off within a four-day period in late April and early May.
The inclement weather this year has wreaked havoc on the team's schedule, forcing them to play 15 games over a 14-game stretch, followed by a single day off and a challenging six-game West Coast trip.
Manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged the difficulties posed by the weather, stating, "Obviously, we're dealing with some weather now that affects some of the planning we're talking about."
The rearranged schedule presents additional challenges for a team already grappling with its pitching rotation. In the doubleheader, the Mets have designated offseason acquisition Adrian Houser for Game 1, while the pitcher for Game 2 is yet to be determined. Thanks to the 27th-man rule, they have the flexibility to call up José Buttó for Game 2. Without the doubleheader, Buttó would have been ineligible to play until April 12 due to his earlier optioning to the Minors.
Unofficially, the Mets plan to proceed with Houser and Buttó in the doubleheader, and then rely on José Quintana, Luis Severino, and Sean Manaea for the upcoming three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. However, this leaves a void in the rotation for the first game of a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. Fortunately, club officials are confident that recently signed pitcher Julio Teheran will be ready to start that game.
Unfortunately, the Mets also have two starting pitchers, Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill, currently on the injured list due to shoulder ailments, further adding to their pitching woes.
Although the Mets are undoubtedly frustrated by the rainouts and their winless start to the season, they remain confident in their ability to turn things around. Mendoza expressed belief in his team, saying, "I'm pretty confident in the guys we've got in that room. We'll turn it around pretty soon here."
Fans holding tickets for Wednesday's postponed game will not be able to use them for Thursday's doubleheader. However, they can exchange the tickets for the rescheduled game if desired. More information regarding ticketing can be found on Mets.com/Rain.
