Los Angeles Rams Sign Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on One-Year Deal

The 32-year-old, who spent last year with the Las Vegas Raiders, will now join forces with quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay in Los Angeles.
However, Garoppolo's availability as a backup for Stafford will be delayed as he was issued a suspension last month for violating the league's Performance Enhancing Substances policy. He is expected to miss the first two games of the upcoming season.
The acquisition of Garoppolo comes at a time of significant changes for the Rams. The news of his addition to the team comes just hours after the retirement announcement of legendary Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald. With the departure of Donald, the Rams were in need of additional quarterback options, considering their 2023 fourth-round selection Stetson Bennet spent last season on the non-football injury list.
Garoppolo, along with three other players, was waived by the Raiders in an effort to save salary cap space. This move was not surprising, especially since the Raiders reportedly reached an agreement with free-agent quarterback Gardner Minshew earlier in the week.
Garoppolo's time with the Raiders was plagued with injuries, a recurring issue from his previous tenure with the San Francisco 49ers. He recorded career lows in completion percentage (65.1%), passer rating (77.7), and QBR (34.2) during his stint in Las Vegas. In six starts, he threw for 1,205 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. A back injury sidelined him in Week 7, and he was later benched in Week 9 for rookie Aidan O'Connell.
While Garoppolo may not be in a position to start for the Rams, his addition to the roster provides the team with much-needed depth and security. Stafford's history of injuries, including a neck strain that landed him on injured reserve for six games in the 2022 season, makes having a capable backup quarterback crucial.
The Rams' decision to bring Garoppolo to Los Angeles shows their commitment to ensuring they have a strong quarterback lineup, capable of leading the team to success in the upcoming season.
