According to reports from The Athletic, the Los Angeles Chargers are receiving trade interest for star edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Interested teams are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation, observing if the Chargers will release either Bosa or Mack, both of whom have been key assets to the team's defense.
Both Bosa and Mack have the highest salary cap hits on the Chargers' roster. Mack currently carries a cap hit of $38.5 million, while Bosa's cap hit stands at $36.6 million. The Chargers find themselves in a challenging financial situation, sitting $20.6 million over the cap, as reported by Spotrac.
With the new league year set to begin in a matter of days, the Chargers are now faced with the urgent task of becoming cap compliant. This leaves the team with limited options and potential tough decisions regarding their veteran players.
Since his acquisition from the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick in 2022, Khalil Mack has been nothing short of exceptional for the Chargers. The 33-year-old has played in every game, establishing an impressive track record of 124 tackles and 25 sacks across 34 games.
On the other hand, Joey Bosa's availability has been hampered by a series of injuries, restricting him to just 14 games in the same time frame. Despite his limited appearances, the 28-year-old has managed to record 30 tackles, nine sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery during the previous two seasons.
Notably, Bosa underwent surgery for a groin injury in 2022 but managed to make a comeback in time for the Chargers' bid for the postseason. Unfortunately, the talented edge rusher found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reason during the Chargers' disappointing 31-30 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he received a crucial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for removing his helmet on the field.
Drafted as the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Bosa has spent his entire eight-year career with the Chargers, even enduring the transition from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017. In his time with the team, Bosa has featured in all 93 games during which he recorded 321 tackles, 67 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, and four recoveries.
As the trade rumors surround Bosa and Mack intensify, it remains to be seen how the Chargers will navigate their cap constraints while attempting to retain their valuable defensive assets. NFL fans will now eagerly await any developments in this intriguing situation as the team looks to make the necessary moves before the start of the new league year.
