In a surprising move, former Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Carson Wentz has joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup to reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Wentz, who recently entered free agency, has signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs, as reported by NFL Media.

At 31 years old, Wentz last played for the Los Angeles Rams, where he served as Matthew Stafford's backup in three games during the previous season. Despite his frequent team changes in recent years, Wentz's brief stint under Sean McVay received positive reviews, culminating in leading the Rams to a Week 18 victory and a place in the playoffs.

With the Chiefs, Wentz is expected to be Andy Reid's top insurance option for Mahomes. The team's previous backup, Blaine Gabbert, is still unsigned in free agency. The Chiefs have shown a preference for experienced veterans in the backup role, having previously relied on Chad Henne. Wentz's extensive experience, with 93 career starts, makes him a suitable candidate for the position.

Originally drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in 2016, four years after Reid's departure from Philadelphia, Wentz spent his first five seasons with the team. During his sophomore year, he emerged as an MVP candidate before an ACL tear cut his season short, causing him to miss the Eagles' historic Super Bowl win. In the following seasons, Wentz's performance was inconsistent, ultimately leading to his departure ahead of the 2021 campaign.

After a one-season stint with the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders. However, his time in Washington was short-lived, with a 2-5 record as a starter before his eventual release. Wentz joined the Rams in November 2023.

Interestingly, Wentz's playing style shares some similarities with Mahomes, despite being less consistent. Known for his strong arm and improvisational approach, Wentz is expected to complement Reid and Mahomes' creativity and ability to produce off-script plays.

The addition of Carson Wentz to the Chiefs' roster provides a boost to their quarterback depth, ensuring a veteran presence behind the talented Mahomes. Chiefs fans will now eagerly await how Wentz's partnership with Reid and Mahomes unfolds in the upcoming season.
