In recent reports by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, it has been revealed that the Dallas Cowboys and free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott have expressed mutual interest in reuniting. This comes as the Cowboys find themselves in need of a veteran running back after Tony Pollard's departure in free agency, while Elliott is currently seeking a new opportunity.

Although a potential reunion seems likely, it is expected that even if Elliott re-signs with the Cowboys, the team will still look to draft a running back to serve as their starter. Presently, the Cowboys have Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner on their roster in the running back position, but adding a veteran like Elliott would provide much-needed experience.

Elliott, who will be turning 29 this summer, spent the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys before being released by the team last March. He then signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots. However, it was a season of lows for Elliott, as he recorded career lows in carries (184), rushing yards (642), rushing touchdowns (three), yards per carry (3.5), yards from scrimmage (955), and total touchdowns (five). Despite these statistics, Elliott still managed to lead the team in rushing yards and receptions (51) throughout the season.

Interestingly, a significant portion of Elliott's workload came during the final six weeks of the season, following Rhamondre Stevenson's high-ankle sprain. During this time, Elliott took on the majority of the offensive snaps, accumulating 120 touches for 464 yards and three touchdowns.

Elliott's potential reunion with the Cowboys holds significance, as he was originally selected fourth overall by the team in the 2016 draft. In his early years, he showcased his talent by leading the league in rushing in two out of his first three seasons, earning himself Pro Bowl honors three times.

While the discussions between the Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliott are still ongoing, it remains tantalizing to envision the star running back returning to the team that kickstarted his career. As the Cowboys prioritize the running back position, the addition of Elliott, coupled with a potential rookie draft pick, could provide a dynamic backfield for the upcoming season.
