College Football Playoff leaders have unveiled a new 5+7 model for the upcoming 12-team playoff format, altering the postseason landscape for the 2024 season set to kick off in six months. The plan ensures guaranteed access for the five highest-ranked conference champions, with an additional seven spots designated for at-large teams.
The realignment has left the Pac-12 facing a tough road to contention due to the departure of ten teams, significantly weakening its status as a power conference. Under the previous 6+6 model, the Pac-12 would likely have secured a playoff berth annually.
The remaining Pac-12 teams, Oregon State and Washington State, find themselves at a disadvantage with the new playoff format, coined as the "Pac-2." These slots will now be filled by other conferences such as the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and the highest-ranking non-power conference champion.
In a bid to secure their position, Oregon State and Washington State have entered into a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West conference, ensuring a complete 12-game slate. However, this pact currently only extends to the 2024 season with the potential for renewal. Not being eligible for the Mountain West Championship Game poses an additional challenge for the Pac-2 teams.
The departure of former Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff and the elevation of Teresa Gould to replace him have sparked discussions about expanding the conference or merging with the Mountain West. This move could potentially reignite the opportunity for Oregon State and Washington State to vie for a conference title.
As they prepare for the 2024 season, Oregon State and Washington State are set to face tough competitors, with Oregon and Washington looming as strong rivals in their respective matchups. The Pac-2 teams will need exceptional performances and a series of fortunate outcomes to secure an at-large bid in the playoffs, considering the increased difficulty of the new postseason format.
