In a surprising turn of events, the St. Louis Cardinals underwent a whirlwind of changes to their outfield lineup just days before the start of the regular season. The team confirmed that outfielder Dylan Carlson would open the season on the injured list, joining Lars Nootbaar and Tommy Edman, who were already sidelined. This sudden shift forced the Cardinals to quickly adjust their plans and bring up rookie Victor Scott as their opening day center fielder.

Manager Oliver Marmol personally informed Scott that he had made the major league roster upon his arrival in Phoenix. The 23-year-old, who impressed during spring training, went from Class AA to the big leagues in a matter of months. With Scott's inclusion, the Cardinals will now have four players aged 23 or younger in their lineup, showcasing the team's focus on youth.

The Cardinals had initially aimed for stability in their outfield, naming their three starting outfielders at the beginning of December. However, injuries and unexpected circumstances necessitated a change in plans. Scott's elite speed and defensive abilities earned him the starting role in center field, accompanied by Gold Glove-winning utility fielder Brendan Donovan and Jordan Walker in right.

Team president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, acknowledged the challenge posed by the changes, stating, "You think about the stress our outfield has been under...it's going to be a challenge." However, Mozeliak expressed confidence in Scott's talent and defensive prowess, noting that he will undoubtedly make a significant impact on the field.

To finalize their roster for the upcoming season, the Cardinals will make room for Scott by clearing a spot on the 40-player roster. This could involve placing Edman on the 60-day injured list, providing an opening for Scott. Nootbaar, who is currently on the injured list, is expected to start game-like situations within the week and potentially return to the lineup shortly.

The news of Carlson's injury came about after a collision with Walker during an exhibition game. Carlson suffered a sprained left shoulder and will return to St. Louis for further evaluation and treatment. Although the exact recovery timeline remains uncertain, the Cardinals are hopeful that Carlson's injury will only sideline him for a few weeks rather than months.

In the midst of these changes, Scott's inclusion brings excitement to the team. Throughout spring training, Scott showcased his speed and versatility, stealing 94 bases last season and proving he is more than just a contact hitter. Manager Marmol praised Scott's all-around abilities, stating, "He's fast, he's exciting, but he's a ballplayer. We have a really good player on our hands."

If Scott remains in the majors for the entire season, it would result in the Cardinals losing a year of control over his contract. However, under the new collective bargaining agreement, Scott's rookie year could secure a year of service time and potentially qualify him for the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

As the Cardinals adjust their plans and embrace this new outfield dynamic, one thing is certain - the upcoming season holds plenty of opportunities for their young and talented roster.
