The Buffalo Bills are making significant moves to clear cap space ahead of the new league year, and one casualty of this effort is veteran safety Jordan Poyer. According to sources informed of the situation, the Bills have decided to release the 32-year-old Poyer, who had a salary cap figure of $7.72 million in 2024.

By parting ways with Poyer, the Bills will save $5.72 million on the cap, albeit with $2 million in dead money. This decision was likely driven by the team's need to get younger and more cost-effective on the defensive side of the football.

Poyer has been an integral part of the Bills' defense for the past seven years, earning All-Pro honors in 2021 and a Pro Bowl nod in 2022. Known for his versatility, Poyer was a reliable ballhawk in Buffalo, consistently amassing over 100 tackles in four of his seven seasons with the team.

While releasing a team captain and productive playmaker like Poyer may be a difficult decision, it is not entirely surprising given his cap figure. The Bills are actively working to create cap flexibility, and parting ways with Poyer allows them to do just that.

In addition to Poyer, the Bills are also cutting ties with defensive back Siran Neal, whose cap figure was $3.413 million. This move will save Buffalo $2.88 million on the cap.

The Bills' cap situation was a pressing concern as they entered the day roughly $32.5 million over the salary cap, according to Over The Cap. With the new league year set to open on March 13, all teams are required to be in compliance with the cap regulations.

Buffalo's decision to release Poyer and Neal demonstrates their determination to navigate the challenging financial landscape of the NFL and make necessary adjustments to their roster. As fans eagerly await further moves by the Bills, it is clear that the team is proactively working towards building a competitive and sustainable future.
