As the Atlanta Falcons head into another offseason, the focus is on how they will address free agency and reshape their roster under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Raheem Morris. Despite significant improvements since the arrival of general manager Terry Fontenot and former head coach Arthur Smith in January 2021, concerns remain at certain positions due to factors such as age, unsuccessful experiments, and short-term contracts.

Fontenot emphasized the team's approach to adding good football players that fit their makeup, citing last year's successful signing of safety Jessie Bates III as an example. With approximately $40 million in cap space, according to the Roster Management System, Atlanta is poised to make impactful moves in free agency.

The Falcons' quarterback situation garners significant attention, with two high-profile names linked to the team. Minnesota's Kirk Cousins and Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield, both having connections to Atlanta's coaching staff, present intriguing possibilities. Cousins, with his fit in the Rams-style offense that Atlanta is expected to employ, would bring experience and stability as a proven starter. However, concerns arise regarding his recovery from a right Achilles injury suffered last season. Mayfield, on the other hand, played under Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson during their time with the Rams, providing familiarity but also questions regarding his consistency as a passer.

Should the Falcons opt for a rookie quarterback in the draft, potential veteran options like Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew, or Joe Flacco could serve as suitable backups or mentors. Regardless, finding pass-catching options to complement their clear number one receiver, Drake London, will be a priority. The Falcons currently have only one receiver, London, under contract for 2024 who caught a pass for the team last season. Former Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley, now a free agent, stands out as the top available receiver, but a reunion might not be straightforward given his suspension for gambling.

On the defensive side, Atlanta will need to address their pass rush and secondary. With the transition to a 3-4 base defense under defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, the Falcons will seek to add talent. Defensive linemen Grady Jarrett, David Onyemata, Zach Harrison, and Ta'Quon Graham offer a foundation, but reinforcements will likely be required. Free agents Calais Campbell and Bud Dupree present options, although Campbell's future remains uncertain due to injury concerns.

The Falcons must also decide whether to extend cornerback A.J. Terrell, who enters the last year of his contract. If an extension is not reached, Atlanta may explore free agency for a starting cornerback, with Ahkello Witherspoon and Keisean Nixon being potential targets after their previous success under Morris and Lake.

In addition to these key areas, the Falcons will look to retain some of their potential free agents, including impact players like Cordarrelle Patterson and offensive tackle Storm Norton, while also paying attention to depth and special teams contributions.

As Atlanta navigates the upcoming free agency period, the decisions made will significantly impact the team's direction and competitiveness under the new coaching staff. With ample cap space and important positions to address, the Falcons must select players that align with their vision for success on the field.
