### Wright State's Shocking Victory Over Vanderbilt Ends in Heartbreak
In a dramatic turn of events on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Wright State pulled off a monumental upset by defeating top-seeded Vanderbilt 5-4. This stunning victory sent shockwaves through the NCAA tournament, marking the first time since the current format was adopted in 1999 that a No. 1 seed was sent home before the regional final. The Commodores’ early exit echoed UCLA's similar fate in 2015.
The game saw Vanderbilt's starting pitcher, Austin Nye, faced with a rough outing as he conceded four runs while only managing to pitch against seven batters before being pulled. Despite a valiant effort to stage a comeback, which included a crucial two-run single by Mike Mancini in the final inning, Vanderbilt couldn't overcome the deficit. RJ Austin’s fly-out sealed their one-run defeat, allowing Wright State to celebrate their historic achievement.
However, the joy for Wright State, the No. 4 seed from the Horizon League, was short-lived. Just hours after their remarkable win, they were overpowered by Louisville in a 6-0 shutout, which advanced the Cardinals to the super regional. This marked the end of Wright State’s journey in what was their third regional final and the first since 2016.
Adding to the day's drama, another top team also fell on Sunday. No. 2 Texas was ousted from the Austin regional after losing 7-4 to UTSA for the second consecutive day. This victory propelled the Roadrunners into the super regionals for the first time in the program’s history.
The Sunday games will be remembered for their unexpected outcomes and are a testament to the unpredictable nature of collegiate baseball. Despite their early elimination, Wright State’s shock victory over Vanderbilt will be talked about for years to come.
