In a shocking turn of events, Wynne Lee, the woman who drove her boyfriend during the tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy on the 55 Freeway in 2021, has pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident. Prosecutors announced on Friday that Lee, 26, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of accessory after the fact and one misdemeanor count of having a concealed firearm in a vehicle.

As a result of her guilty plea, Lee has been sentenced to the maximum of three years for the felony charge and one year for the misdemeanor. However, due to her court-ordered at-home confinement since June 21, 2021, Lee has received credit for time served, leading to her release. The Orange County Office of the District Attorney cited state law that allows defendants on court-mandated house arrest to earn credit towards their sentence.

This decision to grant Lee her release has sparked anger among prosecutors, who believe that the law is enabling criminals to evade serving time behind bars. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed his outrage, stating, "Her behavior is despicable, and I, along with our entire Orange County community, am outraged that the state Legislature continues to water down our laws to give criminals charged with egregious crimes break after break."

Although Lee did not fire the fatal shot that killed young Aiden Leos as he was on his way to kindergarten in May 2021, prosecutors assert that she was driving the car during the incident and had a Glock 17 handgun concealed in the pouch on the back of the driver's seat. It was Lee's then live-in boyfriend, Marcus Anthony Eriz, 27, who was sentenced to 40-years-to-life in prison earlier this month for the murder of Leos.

Prosecutors revealed that Lee actively assisted Eriz in hiding crucial evidence related to the killing in the days following Leos' tragic death, leading to a region-wide manhunt. The shooting occurred when Leos' mother flashed her middle finger at Lee and Eriz while driving on the 55 Freeway near Chapman Avenue in Orange on May 21, 2021. In response, Eriz fired a single shot from the Glock, which tragically struck young Leos. Despite his injuries, Leos managed to utter the word "ow," catching his mother's attention. Sadly, he later passed away at a local hospital.

Remarkably, after committing this heinous act, Lee and Eriz proceeded to go about their daily lives as if nothing had happened, even being involved in another incident a week later where Eriz allegedly brandished a gun at a motorist on the 91 Freeway.

It was not until a coworker informed Eriz one week after the shooting that his car matched the description of the vehicle being sought in connection to the little boy's death. After researching the incident online, Eriz discovered the news coverage and learned about Leos' tragic passing. Lee and Eriz were subsequently arrested on June 6, 2021.

The plea agreement and Lee's subsequent release have left many questioning the justice system and the leniency granted to individuals involved in crimes of this nature. As this case concludes, the Orange County community mourns the loss of young Aiden Leos, while grappling with the fallout and implications of this devastating crime.
