In a heartbreaking turn of events, Wisconsin's quarterback Tyler Van Dyke suffered a severe right knee injury during the team's game against No. 4 ranked Alabama. The injury occurred early in the first quarter when Van Dyke scrambled towards the right sideline. As he planted his right leg just before going out of bounds, he was hit, resulting in the devastating injury.
Van Dyke's distress was evident as he was promptly attended to on the sideline following the hit. Eventually, the quarterback was carted off the field, visibly distraught, and taken to the locker room. A halftime update from Wisconsin confirmed that Van Dyke would be unable to return for the remainder of the game.
The Miami transfer, in his first year with the Badgers, had assumed the starting role in the team's first three games of the season. Van Dyke, who had previously played four seasons with the Hurricanes, showcased tremendous potential in 2021, throwing 25 touchdowns and accumulating over 2,900 yards in just ten games. Last season, he played in 11 games, but recorded 12 interceptions while amassing 2,703 passing yards.
With Van Dyke out, the Badgers turned to Braedyn Locke as his replacement. Locke, a redshirt sophomore, started three games for Wisconsin last season, completing 50% of his passes for 777 yards and throwing five touchdowns with only one interception.
The loss of Van Dyke is undoubtedly a significant blow to Wisconsin's offense, given his experience and past performances. As the team continues their season, they will have to adjust and rally behind Locke, who will now have the opportunity to make his mark on the field.
Our thoughts go out to Van Dyke as he faces rehabilitation and recovery. The Wisconsin community, his teammates, and fans will undoubtedly support him during this challenging time, wishing him a swift return to the game he loves.
