### Will Ferrell and Harper Steele Encounter Transphobia During Texas Visit
During a visit to Texas, Will Ferrell and Harper Steele encountered hostility instead of the expected warm reception. The two friends were discussing their Netflix documentary "Will & Harper" when they faced a troubling incident at Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. While the moment did not make it into the final cut of the documentary, both Ferrell and Steele shared their experience with The New York Times.
Harper Steele recounted making a toast that mentioned a trans bill and receiving a negative reaction from the audience. Steele recalled the atmosphere changing, with some boos and a woman loudly declaring, "We still love you." Steele expressed discomfort with the phrase, feeling it implied conditional acceptance based on her abandoning her transgender identity.
Ferrell admitted feeling regret and guilt for placing Steele in that uncomfortable situation. He acknowledged underestimating the intensity of the environment and feeling responsible for not better evaluating the situation beforehand. Ferrell described initially viewing the restaurant as a harmless place for a meal, only to realize the magnitude of the audience upon arrival.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum, "Will & Harper" documents Ferrell and Steele's cross-country journey as they navigate Steele's transition and its impact on their friendship. The documentary highlights their 30-year bond, starting from their days on Saturday Night Live, and details Steele's coming out as a transgender woman in 2022.
Following its premiere at Sundance in January, Netflix acquired "Will & Harper" in a significant eight-figure deal. The documentary offers an intimate look at friendship, transition, and America through the eyes of Ferrell and Steele.
