In a recent development, the wife of a missing Belhaven man, Dau Mabil, whose body was discovered in the Pearl River, has expressed her support for an additional autopsy in the case. This decision comes after Hinds County Chancery Judge Dewayne Thomas granted an injunction to halt the release of the body and ordered an independent autopsy to be conducted promptly.
Dau Mabil disappeared in March, and his remains were discovered in Lawrence County on the Pearl River just a few days ago. His brother, Bul Mabil, raised concerns about the possible cremation of the body, which he believed could result in the loss of crucial evidence. Bul Mabil filed a petition in chancery court seeking an emergency injunction to prevent the release of the remains.
During a press conference, Bul Mabil expressed his suspicions regarding his brother's disappearance, questioning how someone could go missing in Jackson but end up 60 miles away. He also raised concerns about a potential cover-up by the Capitol Police Department, urging a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Dau's death.
On the other hand, Dau Mabil's wife, Karissa Bowley, supported the court's decision to conduct an additional autopsy. Her attorney conveyed her appreciation for the granted relief and highlighted her unwavering efforts to locate her missing husband. Bowley has been tirelessly advocating for Dau's safe return, organizing local community members to assist in the search and pressuring law enforcement for assistance.
Bowley asserts that as Dau's surviving spouse, she holds the authority to determine whether an autopsy is necessary, challenging her brother-in-law's position. She has requested an amended order from the court, stipulating that the autopsy can only proceed after the completion of all ongoing police investigations into Dau's death. Additionally, Bowley insists that the autopsy must be performed by a pathologist who is equally qualified to those working on behalf of the state. She further emphasized that the autopsy must be concluded within one month after the conclusion of the investigations.
Both the Capitol Police and the Jackson Police Department have been actively involved in the investigation of Dau Mabil's disappearance and subsequent death. While the Capitol Police declined to comment on specific details, citing an ongoing investigation, JPD Chief Joseph Wade revealed that he reached out to U.S. Attorney Todd Gee and the U.S. Department of Justice, who have committed additional resources to the case. Chief Wade expressed the shared objective of bringing closure to the family, the Belhaven community, and the citizens of Jackson, emphasizing the importance of justice and resolution.
The additional autopsy, aligned with Karissa Bowley's support, aims to shed further light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding Dau Mabil's death. With ongoing police investigations and continued efforts from concerned parties, the hope for answers grows stronger as the search for justice and closure continues.
