In response to Iran's recent attack on Israel, the White House announced that it would not support a stand-alone bill providing aid solely to Israel, urging the House to pass a comprehensive national security supplemental package that includes assistance for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies. The move comes after the House previously attempted to pass a stand-alone bill, which failed to garner enough support.
National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, emphasized the opposition to a stand-alone bill that only focuses on Israel during a press briefing. Kirby stated, "We are opposed to a stand-alone bill that would just work on Israel, as we've seen proposed. We would oppose a stand-alone bill, yes."
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) confirmed that the House would vote in the coming days on aid for Israel after it was targeted by a drone and missile attack launched by Iran. Johnson expressed the Republican Party's support for Israel, stating, "House Republicans and the Republican Party understand the necessity of standing with Israel."
The details of the aid package for Israel are currently being put together, with Speaker Johnson affirming that efforts would be made this week. However, the focus is on passing the $95 billion national security supplemental bill, which includes aid for Ukraine, Israel, and U.S. allies in the Indo-Pacific.
The White House has been consistently advocating for the passage of the national security supplemental bill, which has received bipartisan support in the Senate. The urgency of the situation was emphasized by Kirby, who highlighted the challenges faced by Ukraine in its fight against Russia, along with Iran's attack on Israel. "Time is not on anyone's side here in either case, so they need to move quickly on this," Kirby urged.
The bipartisan bill, if passed, would ensure swift delivery of aid to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Ukrainian soldiers. The bill seeks to address the immediate needs of both nations as they confront ongoing security threats.
As the House prepares to vote on this crucial national security supplemental bill, all parties involved are aware of the pressing nature of the situation. The hope is that swift action will be taken to provide the necessary support to Ukraine, Israel, and other allies in their respective fights against aggression and threats.
