In response to Ireland, Spain, and Norway's recent decision to recognize a Palestinian state, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan reiterated President Biden's support for a "two-state solution". Sullivan addressed the growing trend of the international community turning away from Israel during a daily press briefing at the White House.
While acknowledging that each country has the right to make its own determinations, Sullivan highlighted President Biden's clear stance on the matter. The President supports a two-state solution that is achieved through direct negotiations between the parties, rather than through unilateral recognition.
Sullivan emphasized that Biden firmly believes in a future that guarantees both Israel's security and a future of dignity and security for the Palestinian people. The President envisions a region where Israel is integrated with all moderate Arab states, fostering long-term security and stability for everyone in the region.
During Sullivan's recent trip to Saudi Arabia, discussions were held with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about a comprehensive vision for an integrated Middle East region. The goal is to seek a credible pathway towards the two-state solution that President Biden has advocated for.
Responding to a reporter's question about Israel's diplomatic isolation and its potential impact on a Saudi deal to recognize Israel, Sullivan acknowledged the concern. He expressed that the growing chorus of voices drifting away from supporting Israel is worrisome, as it may not contribute to the country's long-term security or vitality.
Regarding the recent decision by Ireland, Spain, and Norway to recognize a Palestinian state on May 28, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich vowed to halt the transfer of tax revenue earmarked for the Palestinian Authority as a deterrent. However, Sullivan condemned this move, describing it as strategically wrong. Withholding funds only destabilizes the West Bank and hampers the search for security and prosperity for the Palestinian people, which ultimately aligns with Israel's interests.
Sullivan stressed the importance of continuing to provide necessary funds to ensure the delivery of basic goods and services to innocent people, maintaining that such funds should flow with the required safeguards in place.
The White House's reaffirmation of support for a two-state solution, along with its condemnation of withholding funds from the Palestinian Authority, signifies their commitment to pursuing a path towards peace and stability in the region. As international recognition of a Palestinian state grows, the United States remains steadfast in its efforts to build lasting partnerships and friendships for Israel.
