**Rescue Operation Underway at Unicoi County Hospital Amid Devastating Flooding**
Twenty-three individuals have been successfully rescued from the roof of Unicoi County Hospital by Virginia State Police on Friday amidst severe flooding triggered by Tropical Storm Helene. The dramatic effort was captured on video, showcasing the extent of the devastation in Unicoi County, Tennessee.
Erwin Police Chief Regan Tilson disclosed that, in addition to the 23 people rescued, a Virginia State Police helicopter has airlifted four patients to safety. The combined efforts have been part of an intensive rescue operation as floodwaters have rendered all roads leading to the hospital impassable.
According to Ballad Health, as of 12:27 p.m., 54 individuals, including patients and staff, were stranded on the roof, with seven others in rescue boats awaiting evacuation. The flooding has not only trapped hospital occupants but has also caused the loss of several cruisers and ambulances.
In a fortunate turn of events, a nearby SWAT team, who were in the area for training exercises, managed to save essential medications for the patients. Despite the dire circumstances, Chief Tilson confirmed that all patients and staff members are currently safe.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the National Guard are also actively involved in the ongoing rescue operations. News 5 continues to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as more information becomes available.
