In a disturbing incident that unfolded on August 2nd, a man in downtown Los Angeles was brutally attacked and robbed by a gang of young people on bicycles. The victim, identified as Shailoobek Bazarbai Uulu, was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Hope Street when the assault occurred.
According to Uulu, a group of teenagers riding bicycles pulled in front of his vehicle. When the traffic light turned green, he attempted to pass them, but the situation took a sinister turn. One of the teens allegedly threw a bottle of water into his car, sparking an altercation.
Disturbing footage captured by a witness showed approximately 30 teens surrounding Uulu after he pulled over and got out of his car. The situation escalated quickly as the mob assaulted him, stole his belongings including his backpack and wallet from the vehicle, and vandalized his car by shattering the windows and stomping on the hood and trunk.
The video depicted a chaotic scene as Uulu, barefoot and limping, was relentlessly pushed, punched, and kicked while on the ground. As he endured the brutal attack, a young woman emerged from the crowd and pulled him to safety, potentially saving his life.
Several adults, including a bystander filming the incident, attempted to intervene and stop the attack. However, their efforts proved futile, and the teens eventually dispersed before the police arrived.
Uulu sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg, deep cuts, and lacerations all over his body, requiring surgery. His car, now extensively damaged, is estimated to require $20,000 worth of repairs. Additionally, the attackers made off with his valuable belongings, including important documents, cash, and credit cards.
The victim maintains that he did nothing to provoke the attack, but in the video, one of the teens can be heard accusing Uulu of cutting them off with his car, almost causing an accident.
Despite reporting the incident to the police, no arrests have been made thus far. Uulu expressed frustration and revealed that the attackers even attempted to use his stolen bank cards a few days later.
In response to the devastating losses suffered by Uulu, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to aid in his recovery. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact LAPD's Central Station or provide anonymous tips through the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline or their website.
This appalling attack serves as a reminder of the escalating violence plaguing certain areas of downtown Los Angeles. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in the city.
