Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic presidential nominee, is set to hit the campaign trail in battleground states alongside her vice presidential pick next week, according to sources familiar with the plans revealed to CBS News. With an announcement on her vice presidential choice anticipated by August 7th, Harris aims to meet Ohio's ballot access deadline, which requires nominees to be certified 90 days before the Election Day. A group of about a dozen potential candidates, including Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, are currently under consideration.
Before transitioning the reins to Harris as he ended his reelection campaign, President Biden was engaging in a tight race in several battleground states. CBS News categorized six out of the seven battleground states as toss-ups, with one leaning towards the Republican party. The competitive states include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, while North Carolina is seen as leaning Republican. To increase their visibility and engage with voters, Harris has already made approximately thirty-six visits to battleground states this year in preparation for the upcoming election.
