Vice President Kamala Harris has demonstrated a commanding lead in fundraising as the 2024 race for the White House enters its final stage, according to newly released federal filings. In August, Harris's campaign raised an impressive $190 million, dwarfing the $44.5 million reported by former President Trump's team. The figures from the Federal Election Commission, unveiled on Friday, revealed Harris's substantial financial advantage over her competitor as they head towards the election on November 5.
Not only did Harris outraise Trump, but her campaign also significantly outspent his team in August. With approximately $174 million in expenditures, Harris prioritized creating and airing advertisements to increase her visibility among the American public following her nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate two months ago. In contrast, the Trump campaign's expenditures totaled $61 million, primarily allocated to media buys.
Despite the substantial spending by the Harris campaign, they closed August with $235 million in cash-on-hand, a sizable lead over the $135 million held in Trump's coffers, as outlined in the FEC filings. These latest financial figures underscore Vice President Harris's fundraising momentum since becoming the Democratic flagbearer. Both campaigns utilized various affiliated fundraising committees to amass donations, with the Harris camp and its allies reporting a total of $361 million raised in August, nearly triple the $130 million disclosed by Trump and his associated committees. Moreover, Harris's team highlighted a remarkable achievement of collecting $47 million from almost 600,000 donors within 24 hours following her debate with Trump in Philadelphia earlier this month.
In response to questions regarding the fundraising deficit, Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley acknowledged the Democrats' significant financial advantage, stating that "the Democrats always have a ton of money." Despite this, Whatley expressed confidence in the resources available to the Trump campaign to effectively communicate their message to voters. As the campaigns intensify their efforts leading up to the election, the financial landscape remains a crucial factor in shaping the outcome of the 2024 race.
