**Vance and Walz Gear Up for Pivotal Vice-Presidential Debate**

Ohio Senator JD Vance is set to encounter one of the biggest challenges of his political career on Tuesday as he debates Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. This event represents a critical moment for both vice-presidential candidates in an intensely competitive race for the White House. Vance, no stranger to debating fiery Midwestern Democrats, previously faced off against then-U.S. Representative Tim Ryan during their Ohio Senate race in 2022.

In the 2022 debates, the "Hillbilly Elegy" author was a political newcomer, providing Ryan with ample opportunities to highlight Vance's past controversial remarks, such as his criticism of former President Donald Trump and his comment about "childless cat ladies." These past statements are likely to re-emerge as key points in Walz's strategy to challenge the Trump-Vance ticket.

Since his Senate bid, Vance has accumulated nearly two years of legislative experience and spent several months on the vice-presidential campaign trail. His frequent media appearances and interactions with rally-goers in battleground states have turned Vance into a more seasoned and confident politician. GOP strategist Mark Weaver emphasized that this experience has sharpened Vance's political aptitude.

Former opponent Tim Ryan conceded that Vance has qualities that could benefit him in the upcoming debate. He advised Walz to be meticulous in holding Vance accountable during their encounter. "He's very smart and can articulate the intellectual foundations of Trump's ideas," Ryan noted, urging Walz to ensure Vance doesn't escape scrutiny.

The debate, set to take place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, will be conducted without an audience, and microphones will remain unmuted, although CBS News has stated that moderators have the discretion to cut them off if necessary. When Vance faced Ryan, the debates were marked by constant interruptions and personal attacks, touching on subjects such as abortion and crime.

Vance often recounted his mother's battle with substance use disorder to argue for tighter border security, and criticized Ryan's stance on law enforcement by invoking the 2020 racial justice protests—a tactic he is likely to employ against Walz, who has faced criticism over his handling of the Minneapolis demonstrations following George Floyd's murder.

During their second 2022 debate, tensions escalated when Ryan accused Vance of endorsing the great replacement theory, a conspiracy suggesting that nonwhite immigrants are brought into the U.S. to diminish the political power of white Americans. Vance strongly rebuked the claim, emphasizing his family's diversity and the personal attacks his biracial children have endured.

Preparations for the debate are underway, with the Trump campaign enlisting U.S. Representative Tom Emmer to simulate Walz in mock debates. Vance's team, including his wife Usha Vance and senior Trump adviser Jason Miller, are dedicated to readying the senator for this high-stakes encounter. The goal is to highlight what they describe as Walz's "radical record and policy positions."

Polling data reveals a challenging landscape for Vance. A USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll from September indicates that only 36% of likely voters view Vance favorably, compared to 48% for Walz, with Vance also trailing among independent voters. With just five weeks remaining in the race, both vice-presidential candidates must leverage every opportunity to strengthen their respective tickets.

"The decisive factor in this election is how each side is perceived—whether as the status quo or the agent of change," Weaver said. "This balance will be crucial, and the candidates' performances could significantly influence that perception."
