### Vance and Walz Set for Sole VP Debate Hosted by CBS News
Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance and his Democratic counterpart Gov. Tim Walz will face off in their only scheduled debate this Tuesday. The debate, organized by CBS News, will take place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
The debate will be moderated by "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell and "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan. The rules, as detailed by CBS News, require Walz to stand on stage left and Vance on stage right from the perspective of the moderators. Both candidates must remain behind their podiums throughout the debate.
Notably, there will be no opening statements in this 90-minute event, which includes two four-minute breaks. Similar to the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, no audience will be present in the studio.
Each question will allow the receiving candidate two minutes to answer, followed by two minutes for the other candidate to respond. A one-minute rebuttal period will follow, with moderators potentially extending the discussion for an additional minute at their discretion. Candidates will be guided by lights and a countdown clock to manage their speaking time.
The moderators will be the sole questioners, remaining seated throughout. At the debate's conclusion, each candidate will have two minutes for closing statements. A coin toss on Sept. 26 determined the order of these statements, with Vance winning and opting to speak last.
CBS News maintains the authority to mute microphones but plans to keep them active unless necessary. No advance information about the questions or topics will be provided to the candidates. Also, campaign staffers are prohibited from interaction during breaks, and no props or pre-written notes are allowed on stage. Each candidate will have access to a pen, paper, and a water bottle.
This debate presents a key opportunity for both vice presidential nominees to present their platforms to the nation. Tune in to CBS and CBS News 24/7 on Tuesday, Oct. 1, for live coverage, post-debate analysis, fact checks, and more.
