Title: US to Provide Additional $2.3 Billion in Security Assistance to Ukraine
In a strong show of support, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Tuesday that the United States will soon allocate an additional $2.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. The aid package will include anti-tank weapons, interceptors, and munitions for Patriot and other air defense systems. Austin's announcement came during a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov at the Pentagon.
The move is a direct response to Ukraine's urgent pleas for assistance in countering Russian forces in the Donetsk region. Of the total amount, $150 million will be provided through the presidential drawdown authority (PDA), enabling swift delivery of weapons from existing US stocks. The remaining funds will be allocated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which establishes longer-term contracts for weapon supplies.
During the meeting, Austin made it clear that the United States stands firmly behind Ukraine, stating, "Make no mistake, Ukraine is not alone, and the United States will never waver in our support." Austin emphasized that alongside 50 allies and partners, the US will continue to provide vital capabilities to Ukraine to confront Russian aggression.
The announcement comes just a few days ahead of the NATO summit in Washington, where Ukraine has been actively seeking both military support and acceptance into the alliance. Austin assured Umerov that steps will be taken to pave the way for Ukraine's membership in NATO, stating, "We'll take steps to build a bridge to NATO membership for Ukraine."
Including the newly announced $2.3 billion, the United States has committed a total of over $53.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
The provision of this significant aid package underscores the United States' commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing battle against Russian aggression. With anti-tank weapons, interceptors, and air defense munitions, Ukraine will be better equipped to defend itself and deter any future acts of aggression by Russia.
