The extradition hearing of Kimberlee Singler, a US mother accused of shooting two of her children in their Colorado home, has commenced in London. Singler stands accused of murdering her 9-year-old daughter Elianna and 7-year-old son Aden, who were tragically found dead in their bedroom in Colorado Springs on December 19th, 20XX. The eldest child, aged 11 at the time, survived a stabbing in the neck but required emergency surgery.
During the hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court, Singler's defense barrister denied responsibility for the children's deaths and the attack on the third child. Singler, 36, is facing a seven-count indictment in Colorado, including charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and felony child abuse.
Prosecutor Joel Smith KC revealed that Singler's alleged crimes took place amidst acrimonious court proceedings between Singler and her ex-husband concerning custody of the children. Smith stated that Singler shot and stabbed the first two children, while the third child suffered serious lacerations from a knife attack. Singler initially pointed blame at an unknown male and cast suspicion on her former partner.
The harrowing incident occurred in December when the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary at the residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered the two deceased children and the third child with a severe neck injury. Live rounds, spent cartridges, and a blood-stained handgun were found in a closet, while a blood-stained knife was recovered in the living room.
DNA tests conducted on the knife and gun revealed mixed profiles matching the children and Singler. Additionally, two empty bottles of sleeping tablets were discovered, suggesting an element of premeditation. Authorities found no signs of a break-in at the property.
The third child, who remains unnamed in court, underwent emergency surgery and survived. She was subsequently placed in foster care. On Christmas Day, she informed her foster carer that Singler was responsible for the attack and had asked her to lie to the police. This revelation led to a police interview on December 26th, during which the child recounted how the attack unfolded. She stated that Singler claimed God instructed her to commit the act and that the children's father would take them away.
The investigation led to a warrant for Singler's arrest, and she was apprehended in the Chelsea area of west London on December 30th. Singler's defense barrister affirmed her innocence, stating that she denies responsibility for the deaths of her two children and the attempted murder of the third child.
Throughout the extradition hearing, members of Singler's family, the Colorado State prosecutor, and officials from the US Department of Justice participated via video link. The proceedings are expected to last three days, with the final decision regarding extradition resting with the UK home secretary.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic conflict and its impact on innocent lives.
