The announcement came during a press conference on Friday, where Austin highlighted the critical equipment that will be provided to the Ukrainian military.

Austin stated that the aid package will include essential interceptors for Ukraine's patriot and NASAMS air defense systems, along with additional counter-drone systems and support equipment. Furthermore, significant quantities of artillery ammunition and air-to-ground munitions, as well as maintenance and sustainment support, will also be part of the package.

The announcement follows President Joe Biden's recent signing of a $95 billion supplemental aid package, which had been delayed. Additionally, the US had already announced a $1 billion package aimed at quickly delivering equipment from US stocks to Ukraine.

The $6 billion aid package, however, differs from the immediate stock drawdown packages. Under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), the US will contract with the defense industry to procure the necessary equipment. The USAI emphasizes a long-term supply of weapons and equipment for Ukraine.

The timeline for delivery will depend on the systems being purchased, but Austin assured that the Pentagon would work swiftly to facilitate the process. He emphasized that the US will move as fast as possible, aligned with industry production capabilities.

During the press conference, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown highlighted the flexibility that the USAI package would provide to Ukraine. He mentioned that Ukraine had been rationing and conserving munitions due to limited availability, and this assistance would enable them to operate effectively against the Russian threat.

Austin commended the Ukrainian leadership for their resilience during the past few months, stating that they have been able to hold their own without significant support from the US. The newly acquired capabilities will enhance their ability to defend themselves even better.

The aid package announcement comes after the virtual Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, which marked the two-year anniversary since the initial meeting in Germany. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to the allies for their support, but also urged for more assistance, particularly in the area of air defense.

As the equipment shipments begin under the $6 billion package, Ukraine's military capabilities are expected to strengthen significantly. This aid will not only provide immediate relief but also bolster long-term defense capabilities, allowing Ukraine to better respond to the potential Russian threat.
