In an alarming incident at the Chapman Training Annex located in Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, security guards came under fire in the early hours of Saturday morning. The aggression led to a brief exchange of gunfire, however, no injuries were reported.

The first attack occurred around 2:15 am, when Air Force Security Forces personnel stationed at the entrance gate of the Chapman Training Annex witnessed a sedan driving by. Gunshots were heard along with the sound of bullets whistling past the security personnel.
Upon experiencing the first attack, the guards immediately called for backup, prepared for the possibility of a return by the assailants.

Just before 5 am, the same sedan halted near the gate at Ray Ellison Boulevard and Medina Base Road. Sergeant Washington Moscoso, spokesperson for the San Antonio Police Department, confirmed that the security personnel were targeted once again with shots fired at them. In response, the Air Force guards swiftly returned fire with their service weapons, causing the sedan to speed off. Fortunately, no one was injured during this exchange of gunfire, as stated by JBSA spokeswoman Stefanie Antosh.

Authorities discovered shell casings close to the location where the car had come to a stop. The exact number of rounds fired remains unknown at this point. Additionally, Antosh revealed that there were multiple shooters inside the sedan. However, their motive and the car's make, model, and color have not been disclosed.

As a precautionary measure, the gate leading to the annex was temporarily closed, diverting motorists to alternative routes. The gate reopened at approximately 9:40 am, with security conditions unchanged at Force Protection Condition Bravo. Antosh emphasized that the incident did not pose an active threat to the installation.

Normal operations resumed at Lackland after the incident. It is uncertain whether Air Force Security Forces will augment personnel at the gates of Lackland and other JBSA facilities, including Randolph AFB, the Army's Fort Sam Houston, and the Camp Bullis training ground.

The San Antonio Police Department is actively investigating the incident as an "aggravated assault with deadly weapon", and officers were present at the scene to gather evidence.

The Chapman Annex, previously called the Medina Annex, is situated west of Lackland's main facilities and serves as the hub for Air Force special warfare training. It was renamed in 2020 in honor of Air Force Master Sergeant John Chapman, a combat air controller who lost his life in an Afghanistan battle on March 4, 2002, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The gate where the shooting occurred faces Valley Hi Elementary school. Notably, a display of an F-104 fighter jet stands behind the guard shack, which was manned by a lone security officer on Saturday afternoon.

The motive behind this attack remains a mystery, and authorities are determined to uncover the truth behind this unsettling event at the Air Force Training Annex in San Antonio.
