In a daring move to disrupt Russia's military supplies, the Ukrainian military launched a series of drone attacks on three oil refineries inside southern Russia overnight. This operation targeted the infrastructure that supplies the Russian military, according to a Ukrainian security official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Ukrainian forces deployed drones to strike oil refineries in the Russian locations of Afipsky, Ilsky, and Krasnodar, which serve as crucial fuel suppliers for the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The successful attacks aimed to hinder the fleet's operations and logistics.
Simultaneously, Ukraine also targeted a drone-launching facility in the southern Russian town of Yeysk, where Iranian-designed Shahed drones were stored and launched. The Ukrainian official reported a "series of explosions" at the facility, indicating a significant impact.
In response to Ukraine's aggression, Russia claimed to have downed scores of drones, including those attempting a naval attack in the Black Sea. The Russian Defense Ministry announced that 114 Ukrainian drones had been shot down by their air defenses. Of these, 70 were destroyed in Crimea and the Black Sea, 43 in the Krasnodar region, and one in the Volgograd region.
The drone strikes resulted in casualties, with four people injured, including oil refinery workers, in the Krasnodar region. Additionally, a worker was killed when a boiler room near a bus station in the city of Krasnodar was damaged by Ukrainian drones.
Despite Russia's improved air defenses, Ukraine has continuously targeted oil infrastructure across the border throughout 2024. These operations are part of a wider effort by Ukraine to disrupt Russia's military supplies and undermine their operational capabilities.
The Ukrainian military's use of drones in this recent attack demonstrates their ability to strike with precision and efficiency. The operations involved coordination between the armed forces and the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU).
Amidst escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, the situation remains volatile. Both sides are engaged in a battle of air defenses and drone attacks, with Ukraine persistently aiming to disrupt Russia's military infrastructure. The consequences of these actions are yet to be fully understood, but it is evident that the conflict shows no signs of easing.
