In a significant development, Ukrainian authorities have issued an evacuation order for the city of Pokrovsk and surrounding villages in the Donbas region. This decision comes as Russian forces continue to make gains in the eastern part of Ukraine, despite Ukraine's ongoing offensive into Russia's Kursk region.

Serhii Dobriak, the head of the city's military government, stated that residents in Pokrovsk must prepare to leave within the next two weeks due to the advancing Russian troops. Pokrovsk holds immense strategic importance as one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and serves as a crucial logistical hub for Kyiv's troops on the eastern front.

According to Donetsk region Governor Vadym Filashkin, more than 53,000 people, including nearly 4,000 children, are still residing in the city. In light of the situation, authorities have taken the decision to forcibly evacuate children and their parents or guardians. The escalating threat from enemy weapons has made this evacuation essential and unavoidable, as per Mr. Dobriak.

Reportedly, the rate of evacuations from Pokrovsk has increased to around 500 to 600 people per day. While basic services are currently operational, it is expected that they will soon cease to function as the Russian army closes in on the city.

Interestingly, this evacuation order comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims that Ukrainian troops continue to make gains during their incursion into Russia's Kursk region. President Zelensky mentioned that the goals of the incursion are being achieved, and additional Russian prisoners of war have been obtained for what he terms as an "exchange fund".

One of the primary objectives of this incursion is believed to be diverting Russian troops away from the Donbas region, providing some relief to the besieged Ukrainian forces there. However, on Monday, Russian military bloggers alleged that Ukraine had blown up a third bridge over the River Seym in the Kursk region. While Kyiv did not claim responsibility, the destruction of the bridge is likely to hinder Russian military logistics and help Ukraine consolidate control over the seized territory.

Notably, BBC Verify has identified new pontoon bridges, temporary floating crossings constructed by Russian forces, over the River Seym. Satellite images from Saturday showcase two recently built crossings near Glushkovo. These findings indicate that while Russia is gradually advancing in the east, Ukraine's unexpected move into Kursk has allowed Kyiv to make significant gains instead of slowly losing ground in a war of attrition.

To put the current situation into perspective, Ukraine claims to have seized nearly 1,000 square kilometers (621 square miles) of Russian territory since the initial attack on August 6. Conversely, the Institute for the Study of War estimates that Russia gained approximately 1,175 square kilometers (730 square miles) between January and July.

As tensions rise and a hot war ensues between Russia and Ukraine, concerns arise that Europe may be slipping into a new Cold War. The ongoing clashes between the two nations have undeniably heightened the geopolitical landscape with far-reaching implications.
