In a bold statement, Ukraine's newly-appointed Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has expressed his clear priorities for the nation's diplomacy. Sybiha emphasized that the defense capability of Ukraine is of utmost importance and called for increased access to Western weapons, according to a statement released on his Facebook page.
Following the recent political reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amidst Russia's invasion, Sybiha took over the role of foreign minister, replacing Dmytro Kuleba. Notably, Sybiha's promotion from deputy minister to this key position suggests that he is regarded as a team player by President Zelenskyy.
With a strong background in diplomacy and foreign policy, Sybiha has served as the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey from 2016 to 2021 and also worked in the Ukrainian embassy in Poland. Renowned as a "strong classical diplomat," Sybiha is known for his ability to build partnerships and deliver on commitments, as stated by Polish diplomats.
Sybiha's appointment comes at a crucial time, as Ukraine faces mounting challenges on multiple fronts. He affirmed that joining the European Union (EU) and NATO remains top priorities for the Ukrainian government. To adapt to the changing geopolitical landscape, Sybiha hinted at necessary reforms within the country's diplomatic apparatus, including the opening of new diplomatic institutions and personnel changes.
Furthermore, in response to concerns raised by lawmakers during his appointment session, Sybiha acknowledged the need for better communication with Western countries. This comes as aid and the transfer of seized Russian assets have slowed down, prompting Ukraine to seek alternative avenues of support. It is hoped that improved communication will help overcome these obstacles and strengthen ties with crucial partners.
Apart from addressing geopolitical issues, Sybiha aims to enhance consular services for Ukrainian refugees and citizens residing abroad. Efforts will be made to facilitate their return to Ukraine. Additionally, securing support from major developing countries, particularly China, is viewed as crucial for Ukraine's peace plan to succeed.
With his extensive experience and reputation as a reliable diplomat, Andrii Sybiha is poised to lead Ukraine's foreign affairs in these challenging times. As he assumes his new role, all eyes will be on him as he navigates the complex web of diplomacy to safeguard Ukraine's defense capabilities, expand access to Western weaponry, and forge valuable alliances on the international stage.
